The typical bird loses feathers and replacing a few feathers at a time, penguins usually molt all at once and they undergo what many scientists call a catastrophic molt, they spend 2 to 3 weeks land bound until the process is completed.

When penguins are hunting for fish, they usually ingest quite a bit a seawater during the process the supraorbital gland, which is a special gland behind their eyes, has the ability to filter out saltwater from getting into their blood stream. They will then excrete by sneezing or through their beaks.
