Great Auks was original scientific name for penguins, in the 16th century. This specific species of penguin inhabited the seas that are around eastern Canada, however, they are now extinct. When the travelers arrived in the Southern Hemisphere, they saw the black and white birds that resembled the Auks, and this is when they began calling them penguins.
